Why are we not going to remote area to pursue our conservatory biologist-dream?

Being conservatory biologists means to study specific animals or plants for years deep in the woods or far away in vast ocean or Antarctic, or in some more humane place like natural parks. But before we proceed, let us think about our childhood dreams. They were the reflection of what we watched and saw, weren’t they? Some of us wanted to be Power Rangers, Batman, Superman, (Joker?) TMNT, Ninja, Samurai, etc. Those were figures we found cool and or noble. But, those figures were too cool to be true or they are no longer needed in society. Growing up as teenagers, we watched more realistic things. Some of us then had curiosity about how it was like to be a circus acrobat, doctors, dentist, lawyer, etc. From ‘figures’ to ‘real-life jobs’, but they were still fascinating us. The people with those jobs looked cool in their attires, didn’t they? By the end of our adolescent leisure wondering, we might end up dreaming to be professional NatGeo photographer, human right activists in conflict area, conservatory biologists, particle physicists, archaeologists, librarians, etc. Are they achievable? Yes. Are you pursuing them? Hmm.. I gotta think thrice.

Let’s us ponder how courageous we have been to pursue something extraordinary—that of most of the time ordinary people won’t go for them—over the ordinary jobs or dreams? First, we need to talk about the future, including future financial security. Unfortunately, those fascinating jobs are about being pros or just don’t. You can’t be a mediocre in Physics to be a particle physicist. You can’t be a conservatory biologist if you only would like to stay for short time to observe animals in their true habitat. In short, those dreams take full-hearted effort. I mean, those are unlike the case in which you want to a Chemistry lecture, but a half way through you can take an easy exit: technician or salesman—those lower-grade jobs or irrelevant ones to your qualification and dreams.

Second, who raised you have a big stake of your life. This is life. You can’t really be free to choose what you want to be because often times you have those feeding you and paying your school fees still alive and having control. At least, you would feel indebted and guilty if you make them upset by your choice. Resigning from a permanent financial analyst position to be full-time author or from a post in a big private hospital to help around in Gaza strip is not easy. You gotta be heart-less in the first leap. You should set aside about security and parents’ feeling. Because being cool is about to do what you want to do, not what people want you to do. It takes all courage to decide, “Okay, I want to be a voluntary surgeon in Gaza strip.” Being adults mean to be responsible with what you do. You are no longer you ‘parents’ child’ because you are then a complete mature whose good will is respected. Overwhelming responses from parents and friends is however normal. You just need to tell them that you know what you are doing and you will be just fine.

Third, would you really pursue that path? I mean, for your whole life? It took decades to be like as Einstein, Hawking, and Covey were, or experts in general. You don’t to be worry because appreciation will always come later when you spend long enough in one well. Keep digging until you find water spring or gold mine. The deeper the hole you dig is, less people can fit in. We can call all of those who jump to an adventurous journey of self-proposition as lone travellers. They work hard alone to gain something ground breaking or to do something other people wouldn’t think twice to let their hands dirty with that.

Overall, what you we need is the courage to be lone travellers in puzzle pieces of human being you want to fill and keep steadfast in your belief until your efforts show results. It also requires strong hold on your endeavour and assertive discussion with somebody sceptical to your choice. So, do your dream, because they are not meant to be written in your agenda and forgotten.

Pursue your dreams to make change on Earth like nobody would do it for you.
